This App is based upon the 1979 Book of Common Prayer (Episcopal Church). The purpose of the App is to provide the complete Daily Office Lectionary scriptures that are normally only listed by their passages. In the past, the reader would look up the passages in the Book of Common Prayer for the applicable Year and date. Next they would individually open their Bible to the passage to obtain the reading.
By having the readings in the app database saves the reader from having to look these scriptures up. I hope you and your family enjoy this App as much as I have enjoyed creating it and using it for my own family.
Below is the opening screen (or splash screen as it is often referred to) that you are presented with after you launch the application.
This app was designed to be used without an internet connection. Therefore, all readings for year one and year two are provided.
The Daily Office Lectionary screen is the default screen displayed below when the app load completes. The current days (today's) scripture readings are displayed. The readings are based on the passages that are found in the 1979 Book of Common Prayer (Episcopal Church) for the daily office lectionary.
Typical readings include:
- Morning Psalm
- Evening Psalm
- Morning Old Testament
- Evening Old Testament (if applicable)
- Morning Epistle
- Evening Epistle (if applicable)
- Morning Gospel
- Evening Gospel (if applicable)
Scripture readings are available in New King James Version (NKJV) and New Revised Standard Version (NRSV). The Settings button (bottom toolbar) provides access the these selections. Links to the complete copyright statements are available after each scripture as applicable.
All readings are provided across four pages (Psalm, Old Testament, New Testament, and Gospel). To view all the readings for the current day, simply click the Next button to advance to the next reading or click the Previous button to return to the previous reading.
On the left side of the app display (above) is the Lectionary Index providing a complete list of all daily office lectionary readings for the current year starting with the season of Advent. This is provide to enable you to preview new or go back and read previous readings that you may have missed. The current day is highlighted in blue border and retains a white background if other readings are selected.
Now let's visit the Settings screen (below). The Settings screen display the controls to:
- Choose Lectionary Version
- Choose Text Font Family and Font Size
- Preview selection and how it affects the current readings
The New King James Version (NKJV) and New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) are chosen using the Lectionary Version switch.
Text font family is selectable between multiple available font families. The size of the font can be changed using the five available choices.
After making your selection, the Sample Text region will show how your choices will be displayed. Click the Back button (upper left) to save an return to the main screen.
Finally, there is a Share button (see below) for sharing the current page readings with others via email or the other share enabled apps available.
